Supported training as a vital part of vocational rehabilitation

Becoming qualified and fit for the job market

Ein junger Mann und eine junge Frau aus dem Ausbildungsbereich Verkauf stehen, freundlich lächelnd, in Arbeitskleidung hinter einem Verkaufstresen.

“I’d like to work in nature!” – “I want to do something involving computers!” – “I want to become a cook!” – Career wishes are as varied as people, but they all start out with the same questions: “How can I make my dreams come true? Where do I get a training opportunity?” One possible answer for young persons with disabilities, mental illnesses, social disadvantages or autism spectrum disorders is: “Here, at Berufsbildungswerk Südhessen, or bbw for short.”

bbw provides young women and men in need of support with the opportunity to complete one of over 30 future-proof vocational trainings for jobs which are in demand, provided that a funding institution, for example the responsible employment agency (“Agentur für Arbeit”), bears the costs. Our portfolio encompasses the professional fields Colour Engineering and Interior Design, Green Occupations, Catering, Housekeeping, Wood- and Metalworking, Textile Cleaning, Office, Trade and IT.

Practical learning

Vocational training at bbw means becoming qualified in practice for practice. Our trainees and apprentices are working in customer-oriented training divisions or gaining practice during extended traineeships or “integrated vocational training” (VAmB) in external companies. This allows them to acquire all necessary qualifications under realistic working conditions and become well-prepared for their future working life. Their special advantage: If problems of any kind come up along the journey, for example if theory seems too complicated, our trainees will be supported in an individual and targeted way by bbw’s specialists and by the teachers of State Vocational School (“Staatliche Berufsschule”). Together, we will strive to get the youth fit for working life.

Individual and holistic personal development

Our goal is to help trainees in becoming self-confident individuals because we recognise that a stable personality is prerequisite to long-term success in working life. Therefore, personal development is just as important to us as the acquisition of occupational skills. In their everyday life, bbw’s trainees are being professionally supported by teachers, psychologists and medical experts. Besides offering learning support, we also offer trainings in independently organising one’s everyday life as well as a range of therapeutic measures up to crisis intervention, depending on the youth’s needs.

Assisted living and leisure education at Berufsbildungswerk Südhessen

At bbw, our trainees and apprentices are living in small groups with varying levels of support. Residential communities are generally between 8 and 14 persons living in single or double rooms where they benefit from pedagogic support. In addition to our on-premise residential area, there are a number of external residential communities in the surrounding area. Their distance to bbw has been carefully chosen to allow our trainees to gradually take more and more responsibility for their life, up to complete independence. We are also organising common leisure activities, which are an important building block in each individual’s support concept. Each youth can therefore choose from a broad range of projects and group activities. They include creative activities such as art or music and a large number of sports. Additionally, several regional associations and clubs are cooperating with bbw and the region is rich in cultural and sports opportunities for youths.

Training completion and job placement

At the end of their training, the majority of our trainees successfully complete the relevant state-approved examination and are thus optimally prepared for an independent and autonomous life. We assist them in finding a job and can say that over 60% of our graduates are well settled in their working life one year after graduating.
